Dr. Schwertz was born and raised in Stuttgart, Germany. He attended the School of Medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany, where he received his medical degree and Ph.D. Following graduation, he started his German residency at the University Hospital Halle/Saale, Germany in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, and subsequently was awarded a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Utah, Human Molecular Biology and Genetics, in Salt Lake City. As a Research Faculty, he continued his basic science studies in platelet molecular biology. In 2012, Hans and his family moved back to Germany, where he was awarded a Lichtenberg-Professorship at the University of Greifswald. However, following their hearts and desires, the Schwertz Family returned to Salt Lake City in 2015, and Dr. Schwertz continued his research work at the University of Utah, Molecular Medicine Program.To better serve his clinical passion, he then completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Occupational Medicine at the University of Utah Medical School, in Salt Lake City, where he also received his Master's Degree in Occupational Health. During the COVID pandemic, Hans worked as an attending physician in the University of Utah Work Wellness Clinic, serving the University Health employees in the Covid Command Center managing COVID testing, quarantine requirements, and return to work policies. His professional interests include musculoskeletal work-related injuries, management of work accident-induced wounds and eye injuries, and medical review officer procedures. As a University of Utah Adjunct Faculty, he continues to be involved in clinical and basic science research projects, centered around aerospace medicine and space biology. Hans is married to Kristina, with whom he has four daughters, Lilian, Mia, and the twins Luise and Madita. He revels in being outdoors, skiing, hiking, and he enjoys working on model train layouts and spending time with his family and coonhound, Ruthy.
